What is Technophobia?
The remote control that allows me to switch the cable channel on my television spoilt. Since nobody at home is really a couch potato, we have been slow in getting a replacement. But right now, I am in a dilemma in getting that replacement.
Down with flu, cough and sore throat, I spend last Friday, Saturday and Sunday mostly with Morpheus, exploring the mysterious land of dreams that he created. The medicine strong drowsy effect simply drain all the strength in me, I am sleeping, televising or reading. And becoming a couch potato is definitely easier than becoming a bookworm and hours were spend goggling the television. Though most of the programme doesn't requires me to exercise any brain cell, getting the right channel requires me to exercise my feet as I have to cross that 300 meters (2 way trip) between the television set box and couch to switch the channel. Initially the 300 meters was acceptable but after a few trips, my weak and sickly body starts to whine and grumble. I start to curse the remote control for its failure and incompetence to make my life easier. That's when it dawn on me, how accustomed and dependent I am on the little remote control. Or simply put how lazy I have become.
Interestingly, the feature of the August 2004 issue in Digital Home magazine was on this fully automated home known as The MajikHouse in Australia. The home was the result of a 3 year R&D project by technology company, Majitek. With 18 touch- screen displays and Java- enabled-mobile phone, the inhabitants of The MajikHouse can control all, yes ALL the home's systems, a total of some 2000 devices, from heating, cooling, electricity, security to entertainment. Impressively, in place of blinds and curtains, the MajikHouse uses unique electrostatic glass shading that will tint the glass on windows and doors automatically if an intruder is detected outside. The system can even respond to temperature and humidity changes by opening and closing the louvers to provide ventilation...Guess I better stop going on and on about The MajikHouse, since it is not in my agenda to promote it in my blog.
If given a chance, I wonder will I want to live in such a fully automated house. Personally, I hold great fear towards technology, technophobia, mainly because my laptop have went through all kinds of hardware failure in the last 2 years and cause me great inconvenience. The failure of the remote control simply heightens my fear and makes me recognize I am suffering from one of the detrimental effect of technology on human- laziness. But taking in consideration of my laziness and how I always forget to switch off the electrical appliances at home, The MajikHouse would definitely be a dream house. However, the property estate agent and developer will definitely have a tough time convincing me that the technology employed in the house wouldn't fail.
